EDUCATIONAL PROPOSAL

Research Question: How could a program like Virginia Tech's College Mentors for Kids serve elementary school aged children in rural Appalachia, specifically in Morgantown, West Virginia?

For: College Mentors for Kids

For Whom: Skyview Elementary Schoolers

University Location: West Virginia University

Money Needed: $10,000

Why: We believe that it is important for elementary school students to be exposed to as many different opportunities as possible. Bringing College Mentors for Kids to West Virginia would allow for the children to learn from college students about different interests to follow and to understand the importance of education regardless of their background. Giving mentors to children at a young age is important because they are still very impressionable and it is when we can make the strongest impact. Skyview Elementary School was picked as the recipient of this program because it had high levels of reduced lunches for their students and it is close to the West Virginia University campus. This allows for the children to easily get to the WVU campus and feel connected with the community that they may have not been a part of previously.
